Intumescent paints are coatings which when exposed to fire will foam and char, forming an insulating barrier between the fire and the substrate. They are normally used either for protection of structural steel, or to prevent spread of fire by sealing apertures, (ie door frames) or insulating the substrate to prevent conduction of heat from one area to another. The degree of protection is dependent on the thickness of the coating and the section to be coated. Contact Omnikote Technical department regarding the calculation of protection times.
