Phosphate coatings are used to inhibit corrosion on steel. They vary in method of application, composition and thickness. Lightweight iron phosphate is often used as part of aqeous degreasing processes to avoid immediate ruating of steel before subsequent coatings are applied, but far superior corrosion resistance is obtained with the use of zinc phosphates. Manganese phosphates are usually much thicker and are used to absorb oil in wearing components, rather than as a pre-treatment for coating.
