Degreasing
Any metal component that has been machined, drilled, swaged, drawn or sawn is likely to have oil or grease on its surface, and bright mild steel is given a light coating of oil at the mill to prevent rusting. All traces of oil and grease must be removed before coating.
Some companies claim this can be done with water, (normally to avoid the cost of registration under the EPA). Omnikote takes the view that oil and water do not mix, so in order to ensure the complete removal of oil so essential to our processes, we use hot vapour degreasing plants designed to wash components in a continuously replenished supply of hot organic solvents. One of our plants also includes ultrasonic cleaning to remove small particles of dust and swarf.
